Exploring the Absorption of Bioactive Peptides from Collagen Hydrolysates: Insights from a Randomized Crossover Study

In this collaborative research, Frédérique van Holthoon and Anne Kleinnijenhuis, alongside a team of international scientists, investigate the absorption and bioavailability of bioactive peptides from collagen hydrolysates (CH) derived from various sources such as fish, porcine, and bovine. The study, conducted as a randomized, double-blind crossover clinical trial, assesses the plasma levels of key collagen peptides and hydroxyproline in healthy volunteers following single-dose ingestion. Results indicate that collagen hydrolysates, regardless of their molecular weight or source, yield significant plasma concentrations of bioactive peptides. The findings open the door for further research to better understand the physiological benefits and potential health applications of collagen supplements in food and nutraceutical products.
